Life cycle prolongation of PT Rolling Stock by subsequent usage in third countries - Experiences out of the EU Research Project SPUTNIC

Abstract

SPUTNIC (Strategies for Public Transport in Cities) is a research project funded by the European Commission within the 6th Research Framework Program (RFP6). It aims in particular to improvements to local and regional systems of Public Transport in the Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC) who are in a highly dynamic state of transition. It involves the creation of adequate conditions of competition, changes in institutional networks and an increasing lack of availability of financial resources. SPUTNIC tries to improve PT attractiveness and efficiency in the CEEC by - supporting of stakeholders and decision makers in target identification and achievement - the compilation of the current professional and research knowledge - the production of specific recommendations and practical tools. The project consists of four thematic clusters. The author is leader of the cluster "Equipment and Operational Aspects". The cluster met at regular intervals with an alternating configure circle of international experts to evaluate progress and to exchange views between Western and Central and Eastern European specialists. The cluster work focuses on operational and technical aspects including - Modernisation and Upgrading of Infrastructure and Rolling Stock - Practicability and applicability of second-hand vehicle equipment including the availability of spare parts - Safety aspects - Transfer of innovative technologies - Fleet Management especially taking into account both the bus and road systems, including the trolley bus as a mixure. The author would like to show progress and results focussing on vehicles, infrastructure and PT operating. The presentation contains a summary of the final outcomes of the project, which has been finished in July 2009.
