Abstract

In mixed traffic, particularly near intersections, buses experience significant congestion and delays due to their fixed routes. To enhance bus travel, Bus Priority Strategies (BPS) are essential as they separate buses from the main traffic flow. Given that variation in bus frequencies affects implemented BPS, this study aims to investigate the effectiveness of Dedicated Bus Lane (DBL) and Queue Jump Lane (QJL) under varying bus frequencies. Using Traffic Microsimulation Models (TMMs) in Guwahati, a city with mixed traffic, the study simulates BPS impacts on both buses and Non-Priority (N-P) traffic to ensure benefits for all passengers. Results show that both DBL and QJL effectively reduce bus delays and improve reliability across different bus frequencies. Considering the lowest person delays and highest person discharge, QJL with a presignal and bus advance area is the optimal choice. These findings provide valuable insights for transport planners in selecting and implementing suitable priority strategies.
