Abstract

This study employs questionnaire data and a structural equation model–nested logit (SEM-NL) approach to examine the indirect influence of service quality sensitivity on commuting mode choice via its effect on car dependency. It also explores how socio-demographic and travel-related attributes shape commuting behavior. Results reveal that service quality sensitivity consistently affects both car dependency and the likelihood of choosing non-green transport, forming a reinforcing feedback loop. Commuters more sensitive to efficiency, comfort, and convenience tend to rely more on cars, increasing their propensity for non-green transport modes. In contrast, those more sensitive to economic factors are less car-dependent and more inclined toward green commuting. Seat availability emerged as commuters’ top concern, with respondents willing to pay an extra 24 RMB for guaranteed seating. Based on these findings, the study provides targeted policy recommendations on service pricing and strategies to promote green commuting behavior.
