Abstract

This article introduces Taiwan's ambitious 6-year transportation development plan to upgrade highways, railways, seaports, and airports, and build a sophisticated mass transit and high-speed rail system. It notes the opportunities this will bring to the international transportation engineering profession. The funding allocations for the development plan are noted, and the the details are given of the highway development, urban development, railway development, aviation development, and the port and harbor development segments of the plan. It is noted that the economic outlook for Taiwan in the last decade of the 20th century is optimistic, and the industrial nations of the west should not ignore the opportunities for participation in it.
